Surface Source Water Assessments on public water supply systems
{Empty}
MDH's Source Water Protection program generated Source Water Assessments (SWA) for surface
water-using public water suppliers in 2003 as mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act. The assessments were generated to
document potential contaminant source and land use threats to raw water quality upstream from surface water intakes. New
funding and public water supplier interest in setting up surface water intake protection plans (SWIPP) has created a need for SWA
updates, and MDH has set up Guidance for this Assessment process. Additionally, new SWAs have been created and plans are now
being created and implemented that create parity between the surface water program and Wellhead Protection. This project will
allow MDH to speed up the delineation and assessment roll-out for surface water public water suppliers as consultants work on
some assessments under MDH supervision.
