A statutory responsibility of the Board is to protect the health of the domestic animals of the state, and the Board has the statutory authority to work with the Governor on movement restrictions during a disastrous animal disease outbreak. Minnesota has Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in both wild and farmed Cervid populations. The Board required professional laboratory services in order to conduct CWD immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing on farmed Cervidae samples. An accredited laboratory is required for CWD testing for state and national programs, and the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (UMN VDL) is the only accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the state of Minnesota.
