Bridge Steel Fatigue Details Screening, State Aid
1034721
Purpose: To develop a refined fatigue prone local bridge list, additional fatigue prone screening, steel bridges identified with
fatigue prone details will be incorporated into the SIMS database. Element 882 Steel Cracking will be added to the inventory and
inspection database, so these details can be rated during the inspections, develop a report and publication, and local bridge
owner education.
Why a contract: In 2007 a LRRB research study addressed the fatigue and fracture susceptibility of the State owned Steel Bridge
Inventory. The results of the research were used to document these details for trunk highway bridges on the Minnesota Bridge
Inventory. This information was incorporated into MnDOTâ??s SIMS structural information management system for MnDOT and
their inspectors to monitor and inspect these fatigue details to reduce the risk of undiscovered cracks. The information was also
incorporated into the risk-based bridge management tool (BRIM) for state bridges. This contract/project applied the same
methodology for the local bridge inventory system. Hence, the fatigue information was incorporated into MnDOTâ??s SIMS
structural information management system for Local Bridge Owners and their inspectors to monitor and inspect these fatigue
details to reduce the risk of undiscovered cracks as well. The information was also incorporated into the risk-based bridge
management tool (Local BRIM) for local bridges
