Reversing the decline of northern white cedar wetland plant communities in MN. The project will achieve its goals by evaluating and prioritizing add'l white cedar stands for restoration and establishment of demonstration projects. The project will accomplish this by continued development of a training program for local government resource managers regarding restoration techniques for white cedar plant communities regarding site preparation and re-vegetation techniques and protecting white cedar from damage by poorly designed wetland crossings for roads and trail.

BWSR is responsible to develop contracts to complete tasks associated with completing the project work plan which includes restoration of northern white cedar plant communities. These plant communities only occur naturally in north central and north east Minnesota. BWSR used the following process to determine contractors:
The Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota, Duluth was identified in the project application and project work plan, which was approved by the LCCMR as uniquely qualified to provide the services for this project.

The Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota, Duluth was previously awarded a contract to assist in implementing phase one of the project, the “Northeast Minnesota White Cedar Plant Community Restoration”, (funded under M.L. 2011, First Special Session, Chapter 2, Article 3, Section 2, Subdivision 04r.) and successfully provided work products in a timely manner. Also, Geographic location, Specialized Knowledge, Have shown interest in preservation and restoration of white cedar as a potential and partial solution to managing conflicts between development needs and wetland management.
