ENHANCED SPEED COMPLIANCE FOR WORK ZONES
5546
Current Minnesota statutes do not allow for automated speed enforcement to issue speeding citations, and thus require the
presence of MSP in or near the work zone to enforce the speed limit. Work zones present challenges to MSP in performing
speed enforcement given the presence of limited lane widths and shoulders on which to safely park and pull over vehicles for
speeding citations, in addition to restricted sight distances from work zone equipment and roadway barriers. This project
deployed and evaluated a mobile system that can be used by state patrol officers to safely conduct manual on-site speed
enforcement in work zones. The benefits include: improve officer safety during speed violation enforcement outside of the work
zone; improve work zone safety for field maintenance staff and for travelers; enforcement approach is consistent with existing
state law; and System is portable and provides for easy setup and an intuitive user interface.
