Assessing the Use of Willow Shrub Species on Livin
99008w120
Integrating fast growing willow shrubs with native perennial grasses can provide a multifunctional landscape and can serve as a natural barrier that can trap blowing and drifting snow, helping to improve safety and mobility, improve water infiltration and quality, reduce soil erosion, enhance roadside aesthetics and provide wildlife habiat for grass land nesting birds and pollinating insect species.

The contractor performed the work within the project scope and budget.
The contractor did a great job of adapting to weed control by hand pulling those that escaped the prescribed herbicide treatment. The contractor enhanced upon the previous willow research that was done in New York and was able to demonstrate that fast growing hybrid willows developed by the State University New York are hardy for Minnesota and are effective at catching blowing snow. They were able to build upon previous MnDOT sponsored research to calculate and demonstrate the willow snow fence effectiveness.
