Systems Engineering for Snow & Ice Control
5748
This intent of this project was to improve safety by providing motorists with real-time information regarding accidents, road closures, natural disasters, hazardous waste spills, changing road and weather conditions, road construction and maintenance delays and other factors that could adversely impact the safety of motorists, law enforcement, MnDOT employees and others.

The goal was to produce systems engineering documents for a district wide project that concerns traveler information and traffic control for weather events on rural interstate and state highways. This included dynamic message signs (DMS), cameras, and electronically controlled gate closure systems.

The results of this project were a final Concept of Operations and System Requirements documents which allow any district in the state to build off of the documents for related construction projects. The documents for this project were written in such a manner that they apply to any rural interstate and state highway, regardless of location within the State.

This contract was necessary to advance the safety and reliability efforts of the State with regard to transportation, including the Toward Zero Deaths Initiative, by producing consistency in installation of safety systems.
