Safe Intersection Systems
94260
The goal of this project was to design, install, operate and evaluate three to five distinct Intersection Conflict Warning (ICW) systems that use different technologies to determine the feasibility of using Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components for these types of systems. These ICW systems utilized detection and signing technologies to provide drivers with active real time supplemental warning when there was a vehicle approaching the intersection that presented a hazard when crossing or entering the intersection. The objective of this project was to recommend a low-cost, readily deployable, reliable, cost effective system that can be used by transportation agencies to reduce crashes and fatalities at low-volume, non-signalized, STOP/thru rural intersections.

This project was part of the Toward Zero Death traffic safety initiative and was intended to reduce the number of fatal and life changing crashes that occur at rural high-speed intersections. The Contract was necessary as Mn/DOT did not have the staff and expertise available to complete the objectives of this project.
