Phase III Archaeology Investigations – Hastings Br
95697
Contractor completed mitigation services of Site 21DK0081, for the TH 61 Bridge. State is proposing to replace the TH 61 Bridge over the Mississippi River at Hastings. During Phase I/II archaeological investigations for the project undertaken in 2008, a historical-period site, Site 21DK0081, was identified and evaluated as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This site consists of foundations and stratified deposits from the third quarter of the nineteenth century associated with the former St. John Hotel and Saloon, as well as a distinct horizon associated with the Christmas Day fire of 1899. This site was recommended as eligible under Criterion A for its association with the early development of the City of Hastings, and under Criterion D for its information potential. This work was required to advance the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act, required when there is any federal agency involvement. A contract was needed as MnDOT does not have the time or expertise required to complete the project.
