Preston Historic Overlook is located on the south side of Trunk Highway (TH) 52/TH 16, milepost 19, about 1.5 miles west of the east junction of TH 52 and TH 16. The Preston parking overlook was designed in 1937 by the Department of Highways, and constructed in 1937-38 by the National Reemployment Service (NRS). The overlook was built of limestone quarried directly adjacent to the site which sits approximately 90’ above the South Branch of the Root River. The overlook is laid out in an east-west direction and contains a semicircular drive lane that connects to TH 52. The drive divides the site into two sections: one, a grassy median that is lined with stone curbing; and two the overlook wall. Between the wall and the drive aisle is a flagstone walk that follows the curve of the wall. At the termination of the wall the stone curbing carries through to TH 52; at the same point the flagstone walk transitions into a gravel walk following the stone curbing to TH 52. The wall itself is approximately 30” tall on the drive side and divided into ten segments by 36” tall piers; at each pier location the plans have detailed a bituminous expansion joint. The wall has two projecting overlooks, one smaller rectilinear platform on the western half and one large semicircular platform on the eastern half. The wall varies from 30” to 15’ high on the west (river) side. MnDOT’s historic waysides, located within the ROW, are part of the highway design and provide the traveling public with a point of rest and natural vistas, geological and historic information. This work requires specialty skillsets of the Historic Architect in order to ensure that the historic property is restored according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Preservation of Historic Properties. Stewardship of our legacy historic structures is a responsibility to our client, the public.
